Reno gets recommendation for Gore special counsel Updated 12:20 PM ET July 13, 2000 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Janet Reno said Thursday she has received a recommendation to name a special counsel to investigate Vice President Al Gore over the truthfulness of comments he made about his 1996 fund-raising activities. Reno said she had been given earlier this week the recommendation from Justice Department prosecutor Robert Conrad that a special counsel should investigate answers Gore, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, gave in an April interview with Conrad. Reno said she would like to resolve the issue "as soon as possible," but added that she would be hearing from other Justice Department lawyers. "I want to consider anything that anybody wants to present, so I'm awaiting ... the recommendation of others, as well," she told her weekly news briefing. Conrad's preliminary recommendation was disclosed last month, posing new problems for Gore, who has struggled to get his presidential campaign on track before the November election. He has trailed Republican rival George W. Bush in public opinion polls. Seeking to defuse the controversy, Gore last month released a transcript of the April interview in which he denied taking part in an illegal fund-raising event at a Buddhist temple in California four years ago. Justice Department officials doubted Reno would go along with Conrad's recommendation. Reno twice before has refused to name an outside independent counsel to investigate Gore's activities during the 1996 re-election effort of President Clinton and his vice president. Now that Reno has Conrad's formal recommendation, one official said he did not expect Reno to make a decision until after she returned Tuesday from a trip to Europe. ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> *Mike Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends Shalom, A Salaam Aleikum, and to all, A Good Day. ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
