Secret Document Showed Yeltsin-Clinton Deal
NewsMax.com reported this week that former Russian president
Boris Yeltsin claims in a new book that the Lewinsky scandal,
according to Russian intelligence reports, was nothing more than
a planned effort by Republicans to force the removal of Bill
Clinton from office.
Sounds like Yeltsin has been trying to do some face saving for
his friend.
This is not the first time Yeltsin has come to Clinton's rescue.
Journalist Bill Gertz, in his book Betrayal, reprints a verbatim
State Dept. transcript between President Clinton and President
Yeltsin, during a meeting the two had in March 1996.
Both Yeltsin and Clinton were up for election that year and it
was clear that Clinton had only his re-election on his mind.
Clinton promised Yeltsin that "he wanted to make sure that
everything the United States did would have a positive impact" on
the Russian elections.
Clinton emphasized that "the main thing is that the two sides
not od anything that could harm the other" before the elections.
Yeltsin was clearly baffled by Clinton's remarks because of
Clinton's big lead in the polls. Clinton said there was still
eight months to go before election day.
Now Clinton wanted Yeltsin's assurance that there would be no
"conflicts."
Then Clinton asked that Russia open up its markets to U.S.
chickens, telling the Russian president that "about 40% of U.S.
poultry is produced in Arkansas."
What is clear from the transcript is that Clinton and Yeltsin
had a very cozy relationship.
Intelligence experts say that the Russians may have had even
more information on Clinton, information that could have been
used for blackmail.
Finding out if this was true could have been easy.
The U.S. NSA intercepts most of the coded traffic between the
Russian embassy and the Kremlin, as well as traffic sent by other
intelligence agencies.
This is the area Congress should have explored, asking the NSA
and others to turn over all intercepts relating to foreign
intelligence reports detailing the President's private life.
That was the sleeper issue in the Lewinsky matter, but Congress
was too chicken to raise the question.
