Democrats leader Meg Lees said a search of the party's records found no sign of a payment from Mr Swan to the Democrats' candidate in the seat of Lilley. However, she said she could not speak for the individual candidate for Lilley in 1996, or for the local campaign manager, because both had now left the party. 'I reiterate that the Democrat Party did not receive any payment from Wayne Swan's campaign,' Senator Lees said. 'If we had received it, under our strict party protocols, it would have been disclosed.' Mr Swan has confirmed he made a cash payment to the Democrats' campaign in Lilley in 1996, but he has refused to say how much money was involved or what it was to be used for. However, he has denied the money was paid in return for Democrats' preferences, which were agreed at a national level.
