Reporters from The Associated Press, The New York Times and The
Washington Post have begun a preliminary inspection of Florida's
disputed presidential ballots to determine whether a statewide
recount would be feasible.

The Miami Herald and The Palm Beach Post are counting ballots
independently. The state's ballots were at the centre of last
month's recount dispute between Vice President Al Gore and George
W. Bush, now President-elect.

Others reviewing the ballots were The Wall Street Journal and
Tribune Publishing Co., which represents the Chicago Tribune, The
Orlando Sentinel, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, The (Baltimore)
Sun and Newsday of Long Island.

The various news organisations and Judicial Watch are splitting a
$300-an-hour fee charged by Broward county for the recount.

Governor Jeb Bush said he wasn't sure what the media review would
accomplish. "Everyone will have their own conclusion, and I'm not
sure all this is going to solve anything," he said.

More than 460,000 ballots from Palm Beach County - including the
30,000 so-called undervotes and overvotes that had been thrown
out during machine recounts - began the 400-mile truck ride back
from Tallahassee, the state capital.

Circuit Judge N. Sanders Sauls in Tallahassee ruled that they and
another batch from Miami-Dade County would not be recounted, and
Mr Bush eventually won Florida's crucial 25 electoral votes.
