Iraq rejects Saddam death claims

Mystery surrounds the health of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein this
afternoon.
Iraq's Ministry of Information has rejected Opposition claims
that Saddam, 63, is clinging to life after suffering a massive
stroke at a New Year's Day military parade.
Rumours about the dictator's health have swept the Middle East
since television pictures of the huge march in Bagdhad suddenly
stopped.
Opposition group, the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in
Iraq yesterday claimed the loss of pictures was proof Saddam had
fallen ill or even died.
But the Iraqi government rejected the allegations.
"These reports are so silly that they do not even deserve a
reply," said Salam Khatab al-Nassiri, director-general of the
Information Department of the Ministry of Culture and
Information.
"He also fired more than 140 shots one handed, something most
young people are unable to do - this alone is enough as a reply
to this absurd news," he added.
London-based independent opposition spokesman Dr Mowaffak
Al-Rubaie said that "unusual" activity had been reported on the
streets of Baghdad.
"Something unusual has happened but we do not know exactly what
has gone on," he said.
"There has been a heightened security presence on the street.
There are more police and military units around."
Born in 1937, Saddam played a major role in the 1968 revolution
and became president of Iraq in 1979.
His attack on Iran a year later led to a bloody war of attrition
which lasted until 1988.
Saddam ordered the invasion of Kuwait in 1991. Western states
responded with Operation Desert Storm, a major campaign to
liberate the Gulf state.
