We weren't employing a black man. This was a fellow military man with whom
my husband worked. No one in the South minded if you employed black men as
long as they did not eat with you. We weren't singled out. Others had been
warned. I recall a paper, the house organ of the White Citizen's Council,
that my husband's uncle took to Pennsylvania with him to show the other folks
at the Grange. That particular paper advised people not to buy Chevrolets
because Dinah Shore had black entertainers on her show, and not to buy think
it was Fords, Lincolns or Mercuries, because Ed Sullivan had black
entertainers on his show. It also spoke of Talullah Bankhead as "That
traitoress to the Southland," and mentioned Eleanor Roosevelt in dire terms
as she had spent the night at the local college (which was a black
institution). I'm sure there were other articles, but it's been about 40
years, and I really can't recall them all. Prudy
