medicines are based on plant properties that are now
"synthesized" and marketed for top dollar. In those olden days,
there were some folks who knew which plants were good for what
ailments. You just had to know which plants and where they were.
One of the "newest" cancer drugs is based on the inner bark of a
certain type of pine tree. The active ingredient has been chemically
analyzed, of course, isolated and synthesized--which saves lots of
pine trees and makes it possible for a pharmaceutical company to
patent and market it as a "drug". After all, you can't patent a pine
tree....so where's the profit?
