No...the simple answer is that the author of Shakespeare's plays was in
fact Shakespeare. It would be nice if there were a conspiracy behind the
Shakespearian canon; however, no one who advocates some mysterious
alternative author/authors has ever really produced any tenable
explanation for their self-imposed secrecy apart, that is, from the notion
that the Earl of Oxford did so to avoid scandal and/or recriminations from
certain of the political implications of the plays. Bacon, as anyone
familiar with his work is capable of perceiving, did not have the same
style of writing and it seems incredible that the man who wrote the
"Essays" could also have penned "Romeo and Juliet". The main reason that
Shakespeare appears such an illusory personage is that, like Marlowe
before him, he was just possibly an agent for the Elizabethan court. The
man, Shakespeare, is far more intriguing than any of the (mainly tepid)
pretenders to the canon.
