2 x browning 9mm - used for the killings- 56 shots , no reloads (28 round
clips?- is that right? he deinately didn't reload and he only used the
brownings... i know very little about gun specs- but do they really take 28
round clips?)
2 x smith & wesson .357. one used to top himself afterward.

Would the presence of a sporting/hunting firearm have been a deterent

no it wouldn't deter. the level of the contact crime is not the same as in
the US- firearm crimes are rare as the ability to purchase firearms is
limited to the higher level criminals and terrorist groups. in america there
is a good chance that a burglar will be armed with a gun- in the UK the same
burglar would not be armed- or if he was it would be a cosh or a blade.
to have guns circulating would change this- it would raise the level both in
the criminal and in the householder. in the US there is an ever increasing
internal arms race going on.

the example above shows how weak, or blurry these stats are- you cannot
compare the UK and the US - being burgled by an unarmed assailant and being
burgled by an armed assaillant are both contact crimes- but the level in
each country is different. the chance of death is very much increased when
guns are involved as oipposed to any other weapon.

in all the major cities there are mobile armed response teams. they are
permanently armed and actively patrolling. in the old days there were no
regular armed teams on the streets- except for northern ireland.
> But what about the import of surplus military weapons into the U.K.?
mostly going to terrorist groups- it is no surprise that the increase in
particularly ex-military weapons coincides with a rearming by the dissident
republican groups in ireland.
