Has Attorney General John Ashcroft been overwhelmed by the task of cleaning up the cesspool of mismanagement and malfeasance that was the Clinton-Reno Justice Department? An item in this week's U.S. News & World Report hints he's grown tired of the job already, "working bankers hours, normally 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m." Quoting Justice Department "insiders," the magazine's "Washington Whipsers" column suggests the former Missouri senator may actually be contemplating jumping ship for a chance to return to his old stomping grounds. "He can't shake his old Senate schedule and.... dreams of running against his replacement, Sen. Jean Carnahan, in the upcoming 2002 election." In what "Whispers" describes as "another sign of trouble setting in," the former Ashcroft refuses to accommodate his beefed up security detail, driving himself to work while bodyguards tag along behind in a limo.
