FORENSIC WASHING MACHINE

A 'washing machine' that can separate forensic evidence from
soil could save valuable time at the scenes of crime
investigations. "The old-fashioned way - rummaging through
soil or vacuumed material by hand with a magnifying glass
takes hours and isn't efficient," Jay Siegel, a researcher
at Michigan State University who helped develop the system,
told New Scientist. "You can sort for days and never see what
you want." The 'Trace Evidence Concentrator' was originally
developed to wash delicate plant roots. It dumps material
into a whirlpool, and tiny holes in the bottom of the tank
blow air bubbles up through the whirlpool, causing less dense
fragments to rise to the surface. Those fragments -- hairs,
for example -- are directed into filters that sort them by
size. One limitation to the device is that it isn't suitable
for water-soluble evidence, like blood.
