THE metro section of yesterday's New York Times carried a long
piece by
David M. Herszenhorn on a protest by Yale's left-wing faculty
members over
plans to present President Bush with an honorary degree.
As Ira Stoll of smartertimes.com notes, what makes the piece
particularly
unusual is that The Times has been completely silent about
another Yale
protest - plans by conservative students to boycott Hillary
Rodham Clinton's
appearance there Sunday as Class Day speaker.
It's not as if no one has written about the protest: William F.
Buckley Jr.,
for example, wrote a nationally syndicated column about it which
The Post
published on March 31.
Also unmentioned by The Times is how the Ivy League has boycotted
the new
White House team - in favor of Clinton officials. In fact, the
president's
appearance at his alma mater is the only scheduled Ivy League
commencement
speech by an administration official.
Besides Hillary's Yale invite, former Treasury Secretary Robert
Rubin has
been picked to deliver commencement speeches at Harvard and
Williams, while
ex-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will do the honors at
Brown.
