Jerusalemites observe general strike on annexation anniversary

Occupied Jerusalem: 28 June, 2001 (IAP News) - A general strike was
observed in East al-Quds Thursday on the 34th anniversary of the
annexation by the Zionist regime of the Arab-Islamic town following the
1967 war.

The strike, called for by a coalition of nationalist and Islamic forces,
was apparently meant to reassert Palestinian rejection of all Judaization
of the Arab-Islamic town and their determination to liberate the holy city
from Zionist shackles sooner or later.

"This is an Arab- Islamic town, it is the heart of Palestine, and Arabs
and Muslims will not rest until they recover it from the hands of the
oppressors," said the Mufti of al-Quds, Ikrema Sabri, in a special
interview with the Voice of Palestine.

Christian Orthodox leader in Jerusalem Rev. Hanna Atalla voiced a similar
position.

"As Christians of the Holy Land, we shall not rest until we see the end of
the Zionist occupation of Al-Quds."

The Zionist Regime annexed the city only three weeks after the 1967
Arab-Israeli war.

Since then, successive Zionist governments have made frenzied efforts to
obliterate the Arab-Islamic identity of al-Quds, through ethnic cleansing,
house demolition and land confiscation.

According to Khalil Tufakji, head of the cartography department at the Arab
Studies Center at Orient House in Alqods, the Zionist regime expropriated
35% (24 sq. kilometers) of al-Quds' total area.

A further 40% of the town's open space was declared "green area," a ruse to
block Arab demographic growth in the city.

Since 1967, the Zionist regime built 180,000 settler units in East al-Quds
whereas the Palestinians were allowed to build no more than 27,000 housing
units.

Furthermore, over 12,000 Palestinians were banished from the town for a
variety of reasons, especially the confiscation by the Zionists of their
residency rights.
