Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.) instructed Chandra Levy, the missing
24-year-old intern, not to carry any personal identification when they were
together, according to police sources.
Levy, a former Federal Bureau of Prisons intern, was last seen on April 30
in Dupont Circle when she canceled her gym membership. Her disappearance
has gained international attention because she was romantically involved
with her hometown congressman.
The true nature of their relationship came to light only after Condit's top
aides had repeatedly insisted that Levy was only a "great person" and a
"good friend."
In searching Levy's apartment, police noted that the only items that were
missing were her keys and a check for $54, a birthday gift from her
godparents. All her other personal items, including credit cards,
identification and cash, were left behind.
On Monday, Condit's Washington attonrey, Abbe D. Lowell, the high-profile
lawyer who represented the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee
during President Bill Clinton's 1999 impeachment proceedings, said Condit
would consider taking a lie detector test in line with a request from
Levy's parents.
Police planned to search Condit's Adams Morgan condo Tuesday. Lowell said
he would give authorities any further information that they might request,
including DNA samples, cell phone records and access to Condit's aides.
As the media has relentlessly bombarded Condit, seeking answers to
still-unanswered questions, the once popular seven-term lawmaker has been
forced to be more forthcoming to the police.
According to published accounts, the day after Levy disappeared, Condit met
at Tryst, a local cafe, with an off-air reporter for ABC News. The reporter
has alledgedly also dated the lawmaker and maintained a longstanding
friendship with him.
Police are pursing various theories as to what may have happened to Levy,
who is still officially listed as a missing person. They range from
kidnapping and suicide to foul play.

authorities, according to police sources, is the possibility that enemies
of Condit may have sought to set him up by abducting the young women.
"And who might that be?" asked an incredulous Joseph DiGenova, a promient
local attorney and former U.S. attorney. "Is this the spin that the
Democrats are putting out? If the police are pursuing that theory, then
they really are wasting their time. Who knew about this relationship? No
one, apparently, except him and her aunt -- and that's a rather bizarre
story."
DiGenova told The Hill: "Searching his apartment now may be a fruitless
effort because of the 10 weeks that have passed. He has confirmed in
essence she has been there. Her DNA would be there." D.C. Police Chief
Charles H. Ramsey and Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer
turned down requests for interviews Tuesday.
Condit's Modesto and Washington offices have not returned messages in the
past week. Before Levy's aunt, Linda Zamsky, revealed that Levy and Condit
had an affair, Condit aides readily returned phone calls to The Hill.
