Tension rises in Jerusalem as Jewish terrorists insist on provoking Muslims
Occupied Jerusalem: 28 July, 2001 (IAP News) - Tension in this divided
city has increased substantially following a decision by the Israel's so
called "high court" to allow a groups of Jewish fanatics to lay the
foundation-stone for a Jewish temple on land belonging to Muslims near the
Haram al Sharif, the Noble sanctuary.
The court decision infuriated Muslims throughout Palestine who called it
"a brazen flying-in-the-face of Muslim feelings and an unequivocal
provocation to Muslims everywhere."
"What the Jews are telling us is that we will destroy your holy places
regardless of how you feel about it," said Ikrema Sabri, the Mufti of
Jerusalem and the whole of Palestine.
Sabri said Muslims would converge at the Masjidul Aksa in great numbers on
Sunday to thwart "this provocative act."
"We, with God's help, shall prevent them from carrying out their evil plans."
The Unified leadership of the Uprising, a coalition of Islamic and
nationalist groups, also called on their followers to show up at the Haram
al Sharif esplanade on Sunday.
Christian leaders, too, condemned plans by the extremist Jewish group,
known as the Temple Mount Faithful, to lay the corner stone for a Jewish
temple on land owned by Muslims.
"We are united with our Muslim brothers in condemning these evil designs
which show that Zionists don't respect the holy places of other religions,"
said Hanna Attallah, spokesman for the Orthodox Church in Jerusalem and the
Whole of Palestine.
Messianic Jewish groups have been seeking to demolish Islamic and Christian
holy places in Jerusalem in order, as they see it, to clean the city for
the Redeemer who, they believe, will rule the world from Jerusalem.
The Israeli government has adopted a soft stance toward the extremists,
emboldening them further.
