-Caveat Lector-

Hmmm! Humans increase in numbers; humans are technological animals; humans
consume natural resources in order to facilitate their existence; humans
develop the means by which to detect their influence on the global
"infrastructure." Gee whiz, looks like these scientists get the "No Shit
Sherlock Award for the month. Further:

>Addressing attendees at a recently held open science conference held under
>the auspices of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program, the
>researchers say this issue must be addressed now, before it is too late,
>since "there is no substitute for natural resources."

Bullshit. Nearly all of the earth's natural resources are renewable. Those
which aren't may be replaced. This presumes, of course, that we are not
stupid enough to harvest any one species to the point of extinction (a big
presumption).

>According to the scientists, agriculture is the biggest user of land,

Oh, God! How will we ever replace the land!! Stop all agriculture!

>with about 12 percent of the entire terrestrial surface used for this purpose.

Damn! I had no idea the figure was that high. I'll quit eating
immediately--NOT!

>This amounts to the entire surface area of South America.

Which would be used for what other purpose? :-)

> However, fast on
>the heels of agriculture is urbanization says Ramankutty.

Leave us alone for ten minutes and we'll live and breed like rats.

>"Historically, we lost forest to crop land. Now we are losing crop land to
>urban areas," he says.

More rats!! Oh no! We need a war to thin the herd! Ethnic cleansing on
behalf of the planet, that's the ticket! :-)

>A few of the notable points brought out by the researchers include:

That they could be replaced by trained chimps?

>Half of the world's supply of fresh water is now appropriated by humans;

Only half? We're wasting water! We could have it ALL!

>Since 1700, nearly 20 percent of the world's forests and woodlands have
>disappeared;

Maybe the scientists would make better use of their time planting trees
than coming up with ridiculous reports stating the obvious.

>Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have risen by nearly a third
>since the industrial revolution.

Anybody know where these guys can get a volcano-sized butt plug?

>This trend will only continue as the global population continues to grow
>along with the per capita consumption of goods and services derived from
>natural resources. Moreover, in some parts of the world intensive
>agriculture is exhausting the land,

I can hear the wheezing from here. :-)

>permanently removing acreage from production and the natural resource base.

Until the land is fertilized, aerated, irrigated and put back into
production that is. Jesus, these guys went to college for this?
