-Caveat Lector- Assalamu'alaikum 13 Jewish settlers killed, 50 injured, in Jerusalem blast Occupied Jerusalem: 9 August, 2001 (IAP News) In an apparent retaliation for the recent spate of assassinations of Palestinian activists by the Israeli occupation army, at least 13 Jewish settlers were killed and fifty others were injured Thursday in a massive blast in West Jerusalem. Israeli police sources said a Palestinian with explosives strapped to his body blew himself up at a Pizza restaurant on the King George St. in downtown West Jerusalem. Hospital sources said eight people were killed in the blast, including the Palestinian. Among the estimated sixty people injured in the blast, ten people reportedly sustained serious wounds. The blast destroyed the restaurant and shattered glass in a 50 meter-radius. The Islamic Jihad organization reportedly took credit for the blast in an anonymous call wit AFP in Amman. And in the first reaction of an Israeli official to the incident, the Jewish mayor of Jerusalem Ehud Olmert admitted that Israel was unable to stop "suicidal bomb attacks." Olmert, who was speaking on the Israeli state-run radio, urged Israelis to come to terms with the fact that civilians are killed in war time. He said the Zionist regime can reduce but not completely eradicate Palestinian guerilla operations. The Jerusalem blast is believed to be a retaliation for the recent spate of assassinations of Palestinian political leaders by the Israeli occupation army. The latest assassination or targeted killing of Palestinians by the Israeli army took place on 31 July when Israeli apache helicopters fired several missiles at a building in downtown Nablus housing a media office affiliated to the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas. The bombing killed eight people including two children from the same family.
