Please! Paganism is largely an invention of the 1850's with no historical
basis. Wagner relied on Nordic/Tutonic writings which can be traced to a
least 1100 and likely 1000 years before that. Folks who follow this path
today call themselves Heathens and generally disdain Pagans considering them
to be untutored and undisciplened. These writings, the Eddas being the most
noted, are far more reliable sources of the roots of Western culture than
Greek myths or Jewish fairy tales. They also have startling similarities to
the Vedas.
What Wagner was after has nothing to do with today's fuzzy bunny Wiccans. It
also puzzles me why we take his political views any more seriously than
those Michael Jackson or Vanilla Ice or G.W. Bush's opinions of opera.
As with most artists, listen to their works, not their interviews.
