Then what religion/philosophy were the Germanic people practicing prior

"Pagan" is the catch-all term usually referred to the religions native
peoples practiced before being converted to Christianity...
"Heathen" was a term used by pagan Rome to refer to people who lived
outside of Rome, and practiced other religions than the official -- pagan
-- Roman religion; they were the 'people of the heath', and hence their
religious practices were called 'heathen'...
The Christian church adopted the term 'heathen' to refer to religions
other than its own...

And those writings were based on a far older oral tradition, a tradition
dating back to PAGAN times...

I don't know anyone who willingly refers to themselves as heathens, as it
is a term now full of negative connotations...the preferred, politically
correct term that they use is 'pagan'...although, as you point out, many
modern-day pagans follow a religion and/or philosophy that is only
decades to a century old, not millenia...

Wiccans are only one 'flavor' of paganism...while Wagner is definitely
NOT Wiccan, his operas are definitely pagan, as they utilize legends
from the pagan past of the Germanic people....
