Surely the card is not required.  Tom Thumb has a card system, but they
are not required to shop there.  You simply get more "sale items" than
people who do not have the card.

Wal-Mart opened its 1,000th supercenter in August of 2001, not counting
their ~1,700 regular Wal-Mart stores.  Counting the Sam's, Wal-Mart,
Supercenters, and Neighborhood Markets, they have 3,500 locations in the
United States alone.  Add the 1,000 international locations and that
brings them up to 4,500 locations and over one million employees.  They do
191 billion per year in sales.  They're planning to open another 180-185
supercenters in 2003, plus more Sam's and regular Wal-Marts.

I saw absolutely nothing in the article saying that a loyalty card was
required.  So don't get the card and you will have nothing to worry about.
