Robinson tells Welsh: you are weakest link

ANNE ROBINSON, presenter of TV quiz show The Weakest Link, was at the
centre of a race row yesterday after making disparaging comments
about Welsh people during a comedy show.

The BBC was threatened with legal action and Welsh MPs demanded an
apology from Greg Dyke, the BBC's director-general, after Miss
Robinson described the Welsh as "irritating" during an appearance on
BBC2's Room 101. "What are they for?" she asked. "They are always so
pleased with themselves."

The programme, to be repeated on Sunday, invites celebrities to
banish their pet hates to "Room 101", an allusion to George Orwell's
novel 1984, in which room 101 contained people's worst fears.

MPs on the Commons Welsh Committee said they wanted to summon Mr Dyke
to appear before them to explain why he allowed the comments to be
broadcast.

Martyn Jones, committee chairman, said: "While we do have broad
shoulders in Wales, I think this is bordering on racist. If the
remarks had been about black people, or Pakistanis or gays, they just
would not have gone out." Mr Jones said he had long regarded Miss
Robinson, 57, whose intimidating performance on The Weakest Link has
made it an international hit, as "an appalling woman" presenting "an
appalling show".

And he claimed other committee members, who are currently examining
ways to promote Wales, felt the same about Miss Robinson's remarks.
Cefn, a Welsh civil rights group, said it had sent a letter to the
police asking them to take action against the corporation and Miss
Robinson under the Race Relations Act.

Eleri Carrog, a spokesman for the group, said: "Anne Robinson's
choice of Wales and the Welsh to be disposed of, and the terms used
to disparage both our people and our language, shows a clear intent
to incite racial hatred towards us. The response of the studio
audience in booing when Paul Merton, the show's host, decided not to
'exterminate the Welsh' also showed that Anne Robinson had been
successful in her intent."

Cefn has also written to the Broadcasting Standards Commission,
calling for an inquiry into the matter, the spokesman said.

A spokesman for Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party, said: "We
are astonished that a high-ranking broadcaster thought it was funny
to make such insulting comments about Wales, Welsh people and our
language. Many people rightly feel insulted by what she said and it
shows the need for BBC bosses in London to show greater respect for
all the different cultures of Britain."

But a BBC spokesman said: "It's a light-hearted programme. People go
into the programme knowing they will be making some sort of joke and
it will be said in jest. Nothing has been sent to the BBC regarding
legal action. If we receive it we will take appropriate action."

Miss Robinson was filming yesterday and was unavailable for comment.
