Pakistan's Musharraf Eyes U.S. Military Sales
Fri Feb 8, 9:21 AM ET

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's military ruler General Pervez Musharraf, a
key ally of the United States in its war on terror, leaves for an official
visit to Washington Friday during which he hopes to discuss military
purchases.

"Pakistan looks forward toward normalization of all relations especially also
the military relations, in the field of training and in the field of military
sales," Musharraf told a news conference in Islamabad.

"One would like to address these issues in their entirety," he said when
asked about his U.S. trip.

Defense cooperation between the Cold War allies was suspended in 1990 after
Washington imposed economic and military sanctions against Islamabad because
of its nuclear program.

Information Secretary Sayed Anwar Mehmood told Reuters Musharraf would leave
Pakistan for the United States late on Friday. He will spend two days with
his son in Boston before beginning his official visit to Washington Tuesday.

Long shunned by the international community for seizing power in a bloodless
coup in 1999, Musharraf moved from near-pariah status to being courted by
major world figures after he signed up to the U.S.-led war on terrorism in
neighboring Afghanistan (news - web sites).

President Bush (news - web sites) is due to meet Musharraf on Wednesday for
talks likely to focus on the war on terrorism and tension between India and
Pakistan, the White House has said.

Washington welcomed Musharraf as a new ally after he gambled his political
future by turning his back on Afghanistan's hard-line Taliban rulers and let
the United States use several Pakistani air bases to support the war in
Afghanistan.

The two leaders last met in New York in November on the sidelines of the
United Nations (news - web sites) General Assembly, and Bush gave Musharraf
special mention in his State of the Union address last week, saying,
"Pakistan is now cracking down on terror, and I admire the strong leadership
of President Musharraf."

Tension has run high in South Asia since a bloody December attack on the
Indian parliament, which New Delhi blamed on two Pakistan-based guerrilla
groups.

In the wake of that attack, close to one million troops backed by missiles,
fighters and tanks were positioned along the heavily fortified border between
India and Pakistan.

Washington has worked hard to defuse the standoff between the nuclear-armed
South Asian neighbors, which have fought three wars since independence from
Britain in 1947.

The United States has released $600 million in aid to Pakistan and helped it
secure a long-term $1.31 billion loan facility from the International
Monetary Fund (news - web sites).

The United States and Pakistan were particularly close allies in the 1980s
when the two countries helped Afghan guerrillas battling Soviet forces
occupying Pakistan's western neighbor.
