WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War! Sharon: I will not dismantle the PA By Gil Hoffman JERUSALEM (February 19) - Rejecting pressure from the Right to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said yesterday the PA will endure and he intends to meet with top PA officials in the near future. "I have no intention of dismantling the PA," Sharon told the Likud Knesset faction. "But I do intend to deliver a strong blow to the terrorist organizations, with the hope that one day, there will be someone to talk to." Asked how he can meet with PA officials after declaring PA Chairman Yasser Arafat irrelevant, Sharon drew a firm line between Arafat and his deputies, saying the question would only become relevant if he meets with Arafat, which he does not intend to do. "I have met with the Palestinians, and I intend to continue meeting with them," Sharon said. "I will do anything possible to bring about a cease-fire. [Such meetings] do not interfere with the war against terrorism. They can only help," he said. Sharon sharply criticized his critics on the Right, especially former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, for suggesting he dismantle the PA. "I disagree with those who think we should destroy the PA and then remain there and start running everything there again," Sharon said. "I do not intend to stay in Gaza. In my opinion, this conflict needs to be handled with patience and composure," he said. He denied reports the Americans asked him to limit IDF responses to Palestinian attacks, because they could complicate an imminent US attack on Iraq. He said the US administration and even some countries in Europe understand the need for Israel to do everything possible to defend its citizens. Top IDF officers came to the Prime Minister's Office last night to consult with Sharon on new steps that can be taken to fight terrorism, but the meeting was not expected to yield a major change in policy. Sharon said the government's responses to terrorism have evolved, both in ways known by the general public and ways that cannot be revealed. He said there have been many achievements on the security front, mainly regarding targeted killings. "The one policy that will not change is my decision to draw a fine line between terrorists and the Palestinian population," Sharon said, outlining his "Palestinian Marshall Plan," which he presented to US President George W. Bush during his recent trip to Washington. The plan calls for the US, Europe, and Arab countries to contribute funds to create jobs for Palestinians, instead of contributing directly to the PA, which he called an "empire of corruption." Sharon accused the PA of stealing two-thirds of the income of Palestinian laborers who work in Israel. Sharon said the plan, which is in its final stages, would create 100,000 jobs for Palestinians within territories under their control over the next three years. He said Saudi Arabia should be among the top contributors. Making reference to a column by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times printed in yesterday's Jerusalem Post, Sharon said the Saudis "are big talkers" and should stop talking and start contributing. Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud told Friedman he intends to deliver a speech at an upcoming Arab summit in which he will call on Israel to withdraw to pre-1967 lines in return for full diplomatic relations, normalized trade, and security guarantees from Arab countries. Israel Radio reported that Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is the only Arab leader who has endorsed the Saudi initiative. However, Arafat yesterday praised the idea. In a statement to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Arafat said the "important positions" presented by Abdullah "represent a clear support and push for the peace efforts" toward creation of a Palestinian state in the territories the Palestinians demand, while giving "security for the State of Israel." *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
