"Iran's health officials have sounded public alarm over the spread of a contagious Ebola-type disease, known as Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), saying that thirty percent of the country's cattle are contaminated with its virus," the English- langauge Tehran Times paper reported. "Health officials have warned that a new outbreak was in the making with the start of a hot spell," Mohammad Mahdi Gouya who heads the health ministry's Disease Management Center said, quoted by the conservative daily. The deadly disease "has led to the death of at least 20 Iranians since 2001," the daily said adding that "more than 140 people" have been diagnosed as "carrying the virus." CCHF is a tick-borne virus stemming from livestock which is transmitted into open cuts and sores. It causes massive bleeding through the nose, mouth and ears and can lead to organ failure. The extremely contagious disease can be passed on by contact with the blood and other body fluids of a patient. Initial symptoms include headaches, fevers and vomiting.
