No they didn't Steve. What was actually written by the founders was the
so-called "disestablishment clause"- which basically forbids the
Government from setting up a favored Religion/denomination, essentially a
required or officially favored sect.  This is far from "separation of
Church and State" that some advocated then and now. Separation of Church
and State isn't actually constitutional, but an extra-constitutional
extrapolation from the disestablishment clause that some have claimed
follows from it, which is very much debateable.  There's also a specific
right to freely practice your own personal  religion, but there's no
right to be free of being exposed to others expressing theirs or the
majority culture esposal of their particular religion, as long as your
property rights aren't being violated in their doing so.
