What was actually written by the founders was the so-called "disestablishment clause"- which basically forbids the Government from setting up a favored Religion/denomination, essentially a required or officially favored sect. This is far from "separation of Church and State" that some advocated then and now. Separation of Church and State isn't actually constitutional, but an extra-constitutional extrapolation from the disestablishment clause that some have claimed follows from it, which is very much debateable. There's also a specific right to freely practice your own personal religion, but there's no right to be free of being exposed to others expressing theirs or the majority culture esposal of their particular religion, as long as your property rights aren't being violated in their doing so.
