Machete man claims Bible prompted attacks on gays By Jamie Berry County Court Reporter August 1 2002 The Bible's denunciation of homosexuals prompted a man to arm himself with a machete to go "poofter bashing" with four friends this year, a court was told yesterday. Clint Allan Teariki pleaded guilty to nine charges, including armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury and obtaining property by deception for his part in violent and premeditated attacks on gay men in the early hours of February 28. The County Court was told that Teariki, who expressed belief in the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality, brandished the 70-centimetre machete to rob his victims of money and personal possessions. Nathan Lee Hill, who also pleaded guilty to the same charges, admitted that he laughed after the first attack on a man in East St Kilda, telling police he did not like "faggots". Teariki, Hill and three other men attacked gay men and male prostitutes as they were seen to be soft targets who would not report their attacks to police, said prosecutor Jack Vandersteen. The five men had celebrated a birthday before choosing to go "poofter bashing" and "poofter rolling". The first victim was riding a bicycle at Alma Park, East St Kilda, before the group punched him and kicked him repeatedly in the back, face and mouth. Teariki also hit him in the head with a 70-centimetre machete. The victim, who appeared briefly in court yesterday, suffered an eight-centimetre gash on the side of his head. He was also forced to strip down to his underwear and was robbed of $25 and his credit card, which was used to buy items at convenience stores. The gang later attacked two other men in an Elwood park. Mr Vandersteen said the first victim was regularly reminded of the attack. Acute post-traumatic stress had affected his social and professional life. The other two victims also lived in constant fear. The court was told Teariki needed money after losing his job at a toy factory, while Hill did not think his conduct was that bad at the time because "they were poofters". Mr Vandersteen asked for immediate and significant jail terms for the attack, which was driven by the group's "prejudice against homosexuals". Lawyers for Teariki and Hill asked for their clients to be sentenced to a youth training centre. Teariki, 19, of West Footscray, and Hill, 18, of West Sunshine were remanded in custody, where they have already spent 154 days. Judge Pamela Jenkins will sentence the pair on August 12. The three others are due to appear in court later this year.
