'Curse of Clinton' sidelines Democrats
By Marcus Warren in New York
(Filed: 19/09/2002)

A "curse of Clinton" is being talked of in America
after veterans of the former president's administration were thwarted in their efforts
to
return to big league politics, suffering embarrassing defeats in state primaries.

Janet Reno
Janet Reno, the former attorney general, and Robert Reich, the labour secretary in the
Clinton cabinet, both lost races for Democratic nominations this week to opponents
without
links to the former president.

Ms Reno conceded defeat to a political newcomer in her attempt to become the governor
of
Florida while Mr Reich failed to secure the nomination as Democratic candidate for the
governorship of Massachusetts.

The former housing secretary, Andrew Cuomo, pulled out of the race for nomination as
the
Democrats' candidate for the governor of New York state two weeks ago, giving his
opponent a walkover. Mr Clinton was instrumental in persuading Mr Cuomo to withdraw
from the contest.

The legacy of the Clinton years still haunts his political allies. Ms Reno made enemies
among Florida's powerful Cuban exiles by ordering the return of the shipwrecked boy,
Elian
Gonzalez, to Fidel Castro's regime.

Mr Reich distanced himself from the president during the scandal over his relationship
with
Monica Lewinsky, and Mr Clinton backed one of his Massachusetts opponents.
