It has called on local authorities, the army, car companies and garages to be on the lookout for the black-bodied, white- striped mosquitoes, which are known to breed in used tires and to bite during the day. The mosquito was discovered at Ginton, a settlement near Lod. While the insect bites can be annoying, as with all mosquitoes, the real danger of the Asian Tigers is that they can become carriers of dengue fever virus, which is fatal in about 2.5 percent of those affected by it. According to the World Health Organization, about half a million people a year are hospitalized with dengue fever. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, skin rashes, joint pains, chills, and in more serious cases, vomiting blood. Ministry officials said that in Europe, the bug has mostly been a nuisance because of its bites. The most common way for the mosquito to travel long distances is through international trade in used tires, which are fertile breeding grounds for the insects. But they can also breed in flower beds, and various other receptacles. The insect is particularly prevalent now in Italy, and is believed to have arrived there in used tires from the United States. The mosquito picks up the virus when it bites a person already infected with dengue fever. The virus grows inside the mosquito over the next eight to ten days and then is transmitted by the female mosquito when it bites a person. The virus can remain in the human body for life. There are no known immunizations against it though there has been some progress in that area. The ministry has sent the relevant agencies and companies instructions meant to prevent the mosquito from breeding in Israel. Among other things, all used tire imports must be reported to the authorities, as well as storage facilities for used tires. Local authorities are supposed to spray likely breeding areas for mosquitoes and eliminate piles of discarded tires.
