This was larger than the Countryside Alliance march the previous Saturday. Organised by Stop the War Coalition, it was estimated at over 400,000 strong, as Hyde Park became an ocean of humanity. All speakers – ranging from London Mayor Ken Livingstone, to several MPs, Trade Union leaders, reporter John Pilger, film maker Ken Loach, and representatives of Muslim groups – rejected any war on Iraq, with or without a UN resolution. Several of the speakers pointed out that Bush’s real motive was oil. All speakers supported the cause of the Palestinians, pointing out the hypocrisy of forcing Iraq to comply with UN resolutions whilst Israel breaks all UN resolutions; of calling for the dismantling of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction but doing nothing about the only country with nuclear weapons in the Middle East, Israel. Protests will continue throughout the country, including a day of action on October 31st.
