Gore says economy in 'big trouble' By Sue Kirchhoff, 10/3/2002 ASHINGTON - Former vice president Al Gore yesterday sharply criticized President Bush's economic policy, calling the White House performance on business issues the worst in five decades. Warning that the US economy was in ''big trouble,'' Gore said Bush should give business concerns the same degree of urgency as the war on terrorism by sitting down with Congress to work out a new long-range strategy. Gore also called for a quick, short-term economic stimulus plan, including an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed. ''How can it be essential that we go to war prior to the election, but absolutely fine to wait until after the election before we take any action to deal with the economy?'' Gore said in a speech to the Brookings Institution, a liberal think tank. ''The hard truth is there is a crisis of confidence in US economic leadership throughout the world, and this lack of confidence has become in itself an obstacle to global economic recovery.'' Reflecting splits within the Democratic Party, Gore did not call for repealing portions of Bush's $1.6 trillion tax cut. Although he said that it was time for some members of Bush's economic team to go, he declined to specify who should be fired. ''Like a lost driver who won't stop to ask for directions, the president clutches his old plan and continues racing in the wrong direction - farther and farther into the economic wilderness - with the fate of nearly 300 million Americans in tow,'' Gore said. ''It's time for a reality check.'' Republicans dismissed the comments, which echoed recent criticisms from a string of other prominent Democrats. ''I guess he's trying to figure out some way to be relevant for 2004, but I think he's missed the boat,'' Senate minority leader Trent Lott, a Mississippi Republican, told reporters.
