-Caveat Lector-
The Man is Worth More Than You
by Warren Tilson
http://www.anti-state.com/tilson/tilson6.html
Today I want to talk about "officer safety." This phrase is popping up more
and more, or at least I am just paying more attention to it, and it seems to
be a major doctrine within police departments.
I had heard of the phrase before the
Columbine-shooting-unarmed-fish-in-a-gun-free-barrel-massacre but it was
during the fallout from the shootings that it bubbled up to the front my
awareness.
I recall being nauseous at the thought.
I saw the concept of "officer safety" being used as an excuse for inaction and
I was sick that some scumbag cop honcho was actually using it to explain why
his troops did not go after the shooters. What really made me ill was that
this guy was so clueless as to think that anyone cared. Kids were dying and he
thought that the parents and bystanders first concern was for the safety of
the officers?
Was this man-thing so insensitive to what the parents were feeling that he
would stand in front of the media and say his priorities were to safeguard his
officers at the very real, and paid, cost of more school children dying?
What nearly made me vomit was the thought that we, those that are policed,
were supposed to nod our heads and go "You're right, your officers did come
first, the lives of the children you were supposed to be protecting were not
worth any injuries or deaths in the ranks of the assembled officers." We were
supposed to be so enamored of the police, so happy to have the thin blue line
keeping us from evil that we should accept any cost as long as no police
officer was endangered.
He must have assumed that most of us were so thoroughly indoctrinated that his
comments would just be accepted. He must have thought that the near-relentless
pro cop propaganda that is rammed down our throats would cause a quiescent
acceptance of his totally disgraceful and cowardly tactics.
So it was his mindset that we would go along that was horrifying. That meant
that they think they own us. They are the masters and we the servants. They
the knights and we the peasants.
I was beset with chills and my stomach was heaving. Wow, there he was saying
it, not directly, but it was there all the same. "Police officers are more
valuable than the people that pay their salaries, any number of you can die
before we act and we still expect you to be happy with us. Or at least keep
your negative thoughts to yourself."
Yet cops enforce laws that make it much harder for people to defend
themselves.
How much do you want to bet that if someone else in the school had caught wind
of the killers' plans and had decided to arm himself with a pistol, and had
been caught he would have been hauled off to jail? Cops are good at that kind
of thing.
The local cops certainly made it impossible for people to defend themselves
and then they, the cops, not only failed to defend the victims of the assault,
they did nothing about the soon-to-be killers when they had the chance a few
months before the attack. That is blood-soaked irony.
Any cop that enforces any kind of weapon control is morally obligated to take
whatever risk to life and limb it requires to keep your disarmed "customers"
(that is another dry heave inducing concept that I won't go into now) from
being harmed.
If that means that fifty cops die taking out some madmen well that is what it
means. If a cop does not like it he can quit. Of course asking for a moral
decision from a public employee is like asking a flea not to bite you.
So had they had the balls they would have rushed the place, found the killers
and eliminated the threat. If any cops went down his buddies would step over
him and keep pressing on. Just like soldiers. If you want the fancy guns,
equipment and to pretend that you are commandos then be prepared to accept
casualties like commandos.
Now, I do want cops to be safe. I want them to be in no danger whatsoever. So
I offer the following advice:
Get out of the way. Go away. Stay away. Stop intruding on peoples' lives with
your drug and gun laws, your willingness to help shut down an unlicensed
business, your harassment of prostitutes, your enforcement of various tax
schemes, your collecting dossiers on innocent folk and all the other various
ways you complicate and impose costs on the lives of those you "service". Quit
your jobs trust me, we'll be fine.
Remember when parents are prevented, by threat of arrest, from attending to
their child who is bleeding out of wounds caused by a cop that is "officer
safety".
When a car full of innocent people is pulled over and all the riders are
humiliated by being forced to sit on the curb in full view of passing
motorists that is "officer safety".
When ninja clad SWAT members throw concussion grenades into a house or room
that they know has young children in it that is "officer safety".
Just be glad that you have the opportunity to give up your life or dignity to
keep a cop safe. It is your duty as a tax payer.
