-Caveat Lector-
Democracy didn't die when Bush came in.  Democracy is a very unstable form of government and now can exist only in theory or only in very small government units where all those who are affected take part by reviewing the information available and then deciding on action.  Democracy as a workable form of government was killed a long time ago when the plan of entertaining the masses with bread and circuses was developed and the masses went along with it.  It was killed by every person who thought that violating a moral principle was justified.  Violating a moral principle kills community and that kills the possibility of democracy.  The more the moral principles are disregarded, the less democracy can exist.

Recognizing this fact is probably why this country was set up as a republic.

Feeding people in the community with garbage information is not the way to democracy.  GIGO...the now old slogan...Garbage In Garbage Out...is where we are at in our attempt to bring about a better life thru democracy.   For example, William Shannon, whoever he is, feeds this board a ton of garbage information.  It probably influences many people because there are not enough people who have the time or inclination to refute each item piece by piece.   He violates moral principles, willingly or unwillingly, with his slanted pieces, the board moderator justifiably allows his freedom of speech, and others just let the information he presents stand without confronting it.  Whether WS is a true believer or a plant, it takes time and effort to respond to his views.  This is what democracy is all about and why it doesn't work. And if it can't work on such a small scale as this board, how in the heck can it work on a larger scale when there are no morally held beliefs in common anywhere. Daily we are fed garbage information and what comes out of us is garbage. Since garbage information doesn't physically smell, it appears just fine.

There seems to be no middle ground.  The huge majority ignore any alternative information.  This is probably the 85 percent of the community referred to in the book 1984.  They were described in 1-1/2 pages.  Democracy isn't part of that world in the book or in the reality around us.  Then there is the 15 percent who go along, realistically not asking questions because it would disturb too much  of their world. Then again, as in the book, there are many of us  who like the hero run around saying "If only the community knew what was going on, they wouldn't let it happen...,"  not facing the fact that the community doesn't want to abide by the moral standards which would force them to act responsibly as adults in the world.

It's not only democracy that is dead.  The republic form of government is dying also because there are no lines of truth between those who govern and those who live under government.  There is no morality that is accepted and considered important by everyone.  There is no standard to which everyone agrees that those who violate it will be ostracized.

As I see it, what is left for those outside of morally shared communities is the law of the jungle.  It's not a happy thought to believe that human society, despite all of its innovations and complexities, just lives by the standards of nature which are red in tooth and claw.  Those standards can be imposed by tooth and claw without being based on a moral belief system which is accepted by all. (Granted, religious establishments are being used to justify  just about anything these days.) You get a government which lies to you if you don't stand against lying from anyone.  Your community leaders lie, cheat, steal, murder, covet, commit adultery, do not respect life, and accept the standards that come with idolatry, and respect no higher authority than their own desires and then you come alive when you are affected by those actions, expecting that all of the other community members will become outraged when you are the victim?

Example after example can be cited showing that individuals, organizations and governments are lying.  Until large numbers of a community  say that they will not lie, accept no lying and state that those who lie are unforgiven, it's only stalling for time.  That goes for morality across the board.   It's harsh thinking, but it's the only way standards are useful.  Unfortunately, I don't see it happening, so until then, there will be a lot of victims because of  the acceptance of the standard of nature which is red in tooth and claw.  Tough luck if you are one of them.  You will live by the standards of the community you support.
