Speaking on return from a regional economic summit in Istanbul, Khatami said that in talks with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Necdet Sezer he had noted that "the views and anxieties of our two countries were quite close", according to IRNA. He said that Turkey was agreed that "the sovereignty and territorial integrity" of Iraq must be preserved, and that the crisis over Iraq should be resolved peacefully. "We underlined the need for more cooperation between Iran and Turkey but also with other countries to avoid a military incursion" by the United States, which is seeking to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for allegedly developing weapons of mass destruction, Khatami said. ©2002 IranMania & AFP Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who led his nation during an eight bloody war against Iran, said "We are opposed to any [US] aggression against Iran" in comments made on Monday. Turkey has threatened military action to prevent any moves towards independence by Iraq's Kurds, who enjoy autonomy in a northern enclave protected by US and British military aircraft operating from a Turkish airbase. The Kurds say they want a federal set-up in a post-Saddam Iraq, but deny they are seeking independence. Khatami's comments mark a rapprochement between Iran and Turkey, which has been the target of criticism from Tehran for its close ties with Israel. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
