Here, finally, are the photographs and names of the Muslim men held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and elsewhere, the same men who, as CERJers saw in photographs, were flown halfway across the world hog-tied and sandwiched up tight against one another in C-130 military transport planes, spread-eagled and splayed up against one another in the unlikeliest of positions, for days of flight, their arms and legs pulled apart and stretched between the walls of the planes by thick straps almost as if they were being drawn and quartered ... with cloth sacks over their heads, probably for the entire durations of the flights. When they reached Cuba, they were taken to this unholy place at Guantanamo, and waited there while the military built these little sheds for them, chain-link fenced enclosures with corrugated steel roofs, perhaps similar to the 'Tiger Cages' that the North Vietnamese used to keep the US soldiers in during the Vietnam War. It is here that this film depicts them, in their orange prison-issue uniforms, many if not most of them with photographs, the young men, their soft brown, sober eyes staring dispassionately out of the photographs, as though they surely believe the words -- all the words, every word -- of the lilting Arabic songs of worship that waft from the movie, the songs of prayer and the songs of calling into prayer. Since what these men are undergoing is the very antithesis of Restorative Justice, it is very fitting -- also as we enter the last third of Ramadan -- that these men and their plight finally reach the eyes and ears of a waiting public -- especially their public -- their families and loved ones. How is it that, caught in Afghanistan, came to be these many hundreds of young men from royal families in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and so many other places? These sober and convicted young men -- convicted in spirit but never even indicted, let alone tried, in law? These believers, nearly martyrs, some of them even descended directly from the Prophet himself (PBUH)? My G-d almighty, how is it that these men, and the worship they now enter into together during Ramadan, make me feel so alone? The Qu'ranic and Imams' verses in the movie say so, maybe give me part of the answer, as they point out that when the prison walls close one in, the prisoner inside is spiritually as free as a bird ... it is those outside who close him in who have entered the prisons of hell, in this life and the next. Now, as African-American poet Maya Angelou wrote, "I know why the caged bird sings." I will never forget this movie, 'The Forgotten Ones'. The entire 4MB movie can be downloaded. Another Shockwave movie has also been published at the same time, which is an Arabic one released by the Guantanamo Bay prisoner Arabic web-site, Alasra.org. The movie contains scenes from Camp X-Ray amid the sound of a specially formed nasheed (Islamic song) on the prisoners. The movie also contains a powerful letter, written as a poem, from one of the Camp X-Ray detainees, read out during a sermon by a scholar from the Arabian Peninsula.
