(though half a decade old) does suggest some pretty similar
possibilities to on *nix.  OTOH, the stuff under "Want another X11.app
server" at the bottom of <https://www.xquartz.org/FAQs.html> points up
some xinitrc locations.

quartz-wm (from a quick glance at the source) doesn't seem like it
does enough EWMH stuff for --replace to work, so if it's running...

May do some wonky things with reporting damage.  Could try
re/deiconifying and see if that triggers it enough.  Or possibly it's
weird with Shape stuff; xeyes is a pretty hardcore usecase there.
