Argh. Now it all comes back to me like a big white flash hitting my eyes. Thanks for digging up that detail. It's interesting that this problem hasn't hit us any more seriously.
The perhaps easiest work-around is that you do an ignore for SIGPIPE in your app.
The actual correct fix is to figure out how to teach OpenSSL to not cause SIGPIPEs. Given a first quick look, I'm not sure how we should make that happen...
