Yes; RTMP is still used professionally, often for providing a live video feed to an OTT segmenter that will then segment and produce a customer-facing MPEG-DASH or HLS stream.
At $DAYJOB, we use libcurl to monitor both ends of this, using a (slightly patched) librtmp version with a (slightly patched) libcurl. Using libcurl instead of using librtmp directly means less complexity on our side. My colleague have provided patches to libcurl's RTMP support when we have encountered issues with it; we do trail behind a few libcurl releases, so we might not detect them immediately though.
