This does not really look like a "well-defined" condition :)

It's true that there's no easy way to tell whether it will work without actually trying it. Again, if it fails on a system where it's reasonable to expect it to work (say a unix-like system that is able to build lots of other software), then any problems can be fixed, as has happened many times in the past.
