I like the idea, and this takes us one step closer to smooth
cross-compilation, so it must be a good thing. I didn't review the
patches in detail though (incidentally I think your most recent patch
set is missing the new files, CrossCodeGen.hs and DirectCodeGen.hs).
One small request: please could you update the documentation in
docs/users_guide/utils.xml?
