[cwe-lug] Any fluent in tape operations?

Trying to restore data from backup tapes done on a RH 7.3 system (4MM DAT). 
Tried loading Knoppix, but unfortunately, no joy with mt (it sees the 
drive, but nothing else), restore, or tar. Is there any simple way to 
figure out the tape format?
