Is there any simple way to figure out the tape format?

I can, eventually, but I would like to veryify what's on the tapes if I can.

You should be able to use dd straight from the device. How big is the tape? I ask because I recall many moons ago, we also were having some issues with a tape device. So we dd'ed tape device to a file and used tar on the file. Don't quote me on that exact method, but it was something like that.

Sounds like a possibility!

        Thanks!

        Lee
