Thanks, Tom. From looking at the tutorials I suspect something is
not set correctly. Specifically, I looked at this page:

and it mentions checking the output preferences. On that screen shot
the playback and recording are different (In vs. Out). But on my
system the same device, /dev/dsp, is listed for both the playback and
the recording device and I can't change it.
How is audacity setup on your machine? What kind of machine did you
use?
I also looked at this page:

which mentions sound card mixers. I've been trying Kmix
(systematically clicking on the red and green buttons) but nothing so
far seems to work. Do I need Kmix?
