They are indeed quite fun and useful.  For some notes I've made on

Just to clarify, Knoppix still uses Isolinux as its bootloader,  
instead of grub.  Grub would be nice, though.  Kanotix uses grub, but  
doesn't use UnionFS, which is necessary for a PDI. (If I'm mistaken,  
someone please correct me.)

Which image are you referring to: an ISO image, the persistent disk  
image (PDI), or both?

Nope.  You can use the regular downloaded CD.

Nope.  Just boot from the CD and Knoppix will scan the available  
filesystems for the file knoppix.img.  Filesystems can be on  
floppies, zip disks, USB sticks, FireWire drives, internal IDE  
drives, and SCSI drives.

Nope.  Just boot from the CD.
