Paul, you've stimbled across one of CB's more obscure "features," but one that can be easily remedied (if I understand your problem correctly). The problem you describe below is usually caused by the ownership function of CBPlay--if a counter is "owned" that attribute makes some others less intuitive.
My suggestion is that you don't use ownership of pieces, make sure the front of the counter is the "generic" one, and set the visibility to only show the top pieces. This is off the top of my head without seeing the settings you have in your GSN files, mind you.
