Here's how I usually do it. Player A puts down a card but does not release it, sends the move to B Player B puts down his card and does release it, sending the move to A. Player A releases his card - note, if he tried to replace it now, B would either notice immediately, or get a skip when he opened the next move. Play proceeds from there normally.
