Bullets stop Lada's race against Putin

THE driver of a late-model Lada hatchback was in a
Moscow jail yesterday, recovering from a hangover and from
an uncomfortably close encounter with President Putin's
limousine.
In what appears to have been an alcohol-fuelled stunt,
the unnamed Muscovite decided to match his 1500cc runabout
against one of the world's fastest and most heavilyarmoured
presidential motorcades. Mr Putin was returning to his
suburban villa on Monday night after a long day at the
Kremlin when the Lada pulled on to Kutuzovsky Prospekt, the
main road west out of the capital, and began to gain on him.
Regardless of make and model, this was no mean feat. Mr Putin
travels to and from work surrounded by vehicles full of
bodyguards, all travelling at 90mph.
As the convoy approached an arch commemorating Napoleon's
defeat at Borodino, the Lada overtook one of the armoured guard
vehicles. It then veered left and immediately came under fire,
taking several rounds in its tyres. The guard vehicle then
swerved round the Lada and rolled over. The Lada came to a stop
and two males inside, aged 30 and 32, are now subjects of an
investigation.
Several bodyguards were said to be bruised, but their
bruises will be minor next to the injured pride of a security
service that considers itself to be the finest in Russia.
