The SAS frequently test weapon and ammunition combinations
for accuracy, reliability, etc.

It was reported that they had discovered one brand of
commercial 9mm ammunition that gave superb accuracy from
the MP5 in full auto fire, the slight downside being a
slightly higher jam rate. This MP5/ammo combination was
apparently used in the Iranian Embassy seige, though for
obvious reasons they weren't telling everyone the brand
of ammunition.

I suspect the SAS/SBS has limited quantities of just about
every service weapon currently still in use around the world
in their armouries for cladestine use.

Given the current state of the firearms market I would have
to agree with Steve that an M16/M4 option is most likely for
a 'general issue weapon' in the regiment, probably the
airbourne and marines as well. Simply because it has all
the fixtures and fittings available for the specialist kit
they might need, something I don't think the G36 or AUG has.

Jerry
