Airgun u-turn sought by MP

A WEARSIDE MP has urged the Government to do a u-turn to
take airguns out of the hands of thugs and criminals.

Fraser Kemp joined growing demands for tighter controls
on the ownership of air weapons after a series of attacks
in the Sunderland area.

City MP Chris Mullin ordered an inquiry into a possible
crackdown when he was in charge of an influential
parliamentary committee.

The Home Affairs committee eventually claimed would-be
airgun owners should have to pass stricter tests before
getting hold of the weapons.

But the demand was rejected by ministers.

Mr Kemp has now joined a group of MPs, including Sunderland
North's Bill Etherington, in calling for a Government rethink.

"MPs up and down the country have seen the damage these
so-called sports weapons can do, and I am no different," the
Houghton and Washington East MP said. "These are incredibly
dangerous weapons."

Mr Kemp added: "The Government has to think again to make
sure something is done to keep these weapons out of the
hands of children and thugs - and even to snatch back the
ones that have already reached people who are unfit to own
them."

The latest intervention means Wearside now has a united
front of MPs backing tougher controls over air weapons.
