Welcome Sylvia! COWs is a great group of people who love to ride. I can't
think of a better way to rest the brain. Looking forward to seeing the whole
family out on a ride.

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for the invite to ride this weekend. Unfortunately, I'm in Washington
for class (I'm finishing up my MBA).
My husband has the kids while I' expanding my brain.

Hi Sylvia,

Welcome to COWs. I only started riding seriously in November of 2009, and I
started riding with the COWs sometime in December. I have never raced before.
So, I'm the noob in the group. They are a great group with many different
skill levels, and lots of fun to hang out with. I'm amazed at the quickness
with which my body has responded to riding. I started out doing 10-15 mile
rides, but when I hooked up with other riders, I soon found myself going
farther and faster. I have mainly tried to put a lot of miles on the bike,
just over 500 since Jan 1. Now I can do 50 to 60 mile rides.

Personally, I like spinning, especially on recovery days. I find that I can
more carefully control and monitor the stress I put on my body by using a heart
rate monitor, and I don't have to worry about getting way out in the country
and losing all my energy. Nothing beats the feel of rubber on the road,
though! I have discovered that long solo rides do more for my mental and
physical toughness than anything.

I recently discovered a book that has given me some insights into training, The
Cyclist's Training Bible by Joe Friel. It may be overkill for the casual
cyclists, but if you have questions, the book has a least one set of answers.
There are probably other answers out there, and I haven't yet tested out the
techniques of the book, but the author seems to base his philosophy on sound
science and years of experience. I'm enjoying the read and learning a lot
about the sport.

I hope to see you out there on the road soon. Some of us plan to ride 50 plus
miles tomorrow, and then a shorter, slower recovery ride on Sunday. Probably
about 20 miles or so. Maybe you and your husband can join us for the Sunday
ride.

Peace,
Joshua

  Hi COWs,

Thanks Don for linking me to Cynthia, and thanks Cynthia for adding me to
the group. My husband and I are really excited about riding with other local
cycling enthusiasts. We both love to ride but our schedule rarely allows us to
ride together because we have two young boys.

Don mentioned that you would be a great group to contact in Wilson for
cycling. My plans are to complete my first 2-day 100 mile ride this June to
the Sand Hills in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure. Would any of
you be interested in joining me or helping me train. I've started a team with
the ADA "Team Novo Nordisk". Yes this is a corporate team- but you don't have
to be employed by Novo Nordisk to participate. Last year they provided
breathable t-shirts and this year I'm trying to get them to provide Jerseys,
shorts, and helmets.

Currently I ride about 15-17mph 10-15 miles at a time.
Right now I ride alone and don't want to get too far away from home base with
out a team.

  What are your thoughts?
