Matt,

Thanks for the info about races in NC, and how to obtain a racing license. This season I plan to build a solid base from which to build. I need to get a lot of miles in the saddle before I think about racing. I plan to ride in the BSG, and I will make that my big goal for the middle of the season. If I can get through that, then maybe I will look to racing, not to win anything, but just for the fun of the challenge.

As far as the local raleigh rides go, I don't think I'm ready for 22+ mph for 60-70 miles. Perhaps one day far in the future I can hand with that pace. When I think I can hang, I'll give you a shout.

Thanks again,
Goose

I'm the guy that Tim was talking about, I like to race my bike, its lots of fun. Prepare to have your butt handed to you, regardless of how fit you are. :-) I just moved back to Raleigh, but I'm still working in Wilson so I'll be around a fair amount, just not on the weekends. I think that I might try to put together a few after work rides during the week after daylight savings time. Last year we had a pretty good tempo/hard ride that went off on Wednesdays. If you're looking for a really hard group ride, you ought to make the drive out to Raleigh, there's rides out there that average 22-23+ for 60-70 miles with attacks thrown in, generally driven by people some extremely fast local pros. If you're interested, I'll give you some specifics. There are races just about every weekend in North Carolina until September. For a calender, check http://www.ncsccyclingassoc.com/. The closest races to Wilson are coming up on the 27th and 28th of March, they're located in Greenville, NC. The Flyer is located here: http://www.usacycling.org/events/getflyer.php?permit=2010-768

Since you've never raced before, you need to get a license, its $60 for the whole year, or you can get a one day license on site, its 10 or 15 dollars. Racing is a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it. Don't worry if you're fit enough, or if your bike is good enough, as long as you have drop handlebars (no aerobars allowed though), you'll be OK. There will be people with $6000 bikes in your race, you'll find they're just as slow as everyone else. The best way to find out if you're ready to race bikes is to do a race and find out. I hope this wasn't too much of an information overload. I hope to see you out there this season.

If you want to race, then you need to hook up with Matt.
He is the only one in town with a road race license.

There are tons of fun (non-racing) long distance rides in N.C. These
are just a few!
There is also a 100K Red Cross ride in Rocky Mount in May but I have no
web site. There is also a Greenville ride.

Then there are the ultra endurance challenges as well, which is a
completely different ballgame.

Subject: [COWs] Yearly Rides

Ok, I know I'm sending out a lot of questions these days, but I've gotten over the "oh it feels to cool to ride sixty miles" phase. So, I need to set some goals for the year, or I'll get bored. Where do I go to find about NC rides and races. I think that my primary goal for the year is to build a solid endurance base, which should probably take the whole year. So, I guess I want to find some long rides to work towards.

Kim, way to lay the smack down on those cyclist haters!!

Peace,
Goose
